We want our locks to look amazing all-year round, but the colder winter months can take its toll on our hair and it needs a bit more tender loving care. You may wonder why hair is dry and incredibly unruly at cooler temperatures. In the winter months hair tends to lose its silky nature and is difficult, and often not willing to submit to our styling efforts. Dry central heating indoors can also play havoc with our hair as the scalp is more prone to dehydration, resulting in dryness.
The team at Garbo’s are here to help and have put together some top tips to avoid dull looking hair in the cold season. Here are our winter hair care tricks and tips.
Olaplex: Our hair hero!
The Olaplex hair treatment is one of the biggest advances in hair technology for years, It really is a hair hero when dealing with damaged and brittle hair. Loved by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Olpalex works from inside the hair strands to strengthen and repair damaged locks where the structure has broken down. Hair bonds break when hair is coloured and subject to regular heat, chemical treatments and up against the elements. It allows you to rebuild the strength, structure and integrity of hair and it is compatible with all hair types. At Garbo’s we love to use the Olaplex system when colouring hair. This reduces damage and ensures the colour lasts longer. We also offer an Olaplex treatment perfect for winter hair care.

Regular trims are essential
The most effective way to winter hair care and looking after your locks is to get rid of the dead ends. Hair that has been over styled, over washed and put through the weather extremes needs some extra care so book in for a trim today.
Keep washing to a minimum
Prevent hair from further drying out in the cold and limit hair washing to two-three times weekly. This minimises the amount of heat styling in your routine, which can be extremely harsh on the hair, especially in the winter. Keep the water Luke warm to protect the hair from losing moisture.
Nutrition for Healthy Hair
A balanced diet is necessary for a healthy scalp and hair. The living part of hair is under the scalp skin where its root is housed within its follicle. It derives its nutrients from the blood. Health concerns e.g. stress, trauma, medications, medical conditions and smoking can affect the hair.
The essential omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamin B12, and iron, found in fish sources, prevent a dry scalp and dull hair colour. Dark green vegetables contain high amounts of vitamins A and C, which help with production of sebum and provide a natural hair conditioner. Legumes provide protein to promote hair growth and also contain iron, zinc, and biotin.. A deficiency in biotin intake can cause brittle hair and can lead to hair loss. Nuts contain high sources of selenium and therefore are important for a healthy scalp. Eating a colourful, balanced diet will help you to have happy healthy hair all year round.
