Christmas is the time to pull out all the stops. With parties around every corner, trying to find a hairstyle to match your overall look can feel like an impossible task. Take the hassle out and let us style your tresses before your big night.
We’ve put together a collection of some of our all-time favourite party hairstyles to get you through the festive season in style. Medium, short, shoulder length or long, whatever your hair length, we’ve got you sorted.
The classic half up half down is a go-to hairdo, versatile enough to work with the vast majority of hair lengths while also vamping up any party look.
A double Dutch braid is a grade up from the infamous French braid. This Christmas party hairstyle is a real winner as it can be easily adjusted for every hair length – long hair works really well with this look, but it can also be achieved with short and medium hair.
For shoulder or medium length hair, swap the large bun for two smaller buns, while for shorter hair simply adjust the style to finish with two pigtails at the base of your head.
Try out different styles like twisting or braiding the accent hair strand to achieve different looks. You can choose to loosely curl the rest of your hair (as pictured) or try something more suited to you – like keeping it straight or opting for voluminous tight curls. Add a pretty hairband for some festive glamour.
This is a fantastic hairstyle for medium and long hair, adding a little more detail to your updo. A criss cross ponytail will look simple and stylish. You can jazz up this fancy ponytail even more by curling the ends of your ponytail or backcombing the hair to make it more dramatic.
Make sure that you spray your hair with hairspray before making the criss-cross section of this look. Hairspray gives your hair more texture and helps it keep its hold, which is vital when you are constructing different looks. By using hairspray before you make the criss-cross ponytail, the chance of the ponytail unravelling over time is reduced. Get on that dance floor!
When leaves begin to fall, temperatures drop and days become shorter, it can only mean autumn is on its way. No matter how hot the summer has been, the next season of the year is now upon us with home comforts, bronzed woodland hues and a pumpkin or two.
Autumn Colour Trend
If you’re eager to stay ahead of the curve, following the runways from New York, London, Milan, and Paris, you can expect to see some surprising colors in the mix. Aside from the usual autumn suspects we can never get enough of (think camel and merlot), colour pops like vibrant orange and hot pink (even popular worn together!) and every shade of purple and pistachio have been seen.
Autumn hair embodies chic, clean sophistication and people give it a little more attention. Your vibe can be playful, edgy, or even ruffled by a hat and scarf, but ultimately your hair this season will require and deserve a little more effort. This season sees shorter lengths and sleek side swept bangs…

For this I am eternally thankful.
What do you think makes Garbo’s unique? Having worked with Garbos for 18 years. I have been privileged to have seen the journey of the salons and its services evolve along side the brands Sebastian, Sassoon, Wella & Olaplex. What makes the salon unique is the team of creative talent, each having an individual style and repertoire of skills to bring to the table. Garbo’s provides a pool of highly trained staff, each striving for the highest degrees of creativity, perfection and self development in a contemporary salon environment.
How do you feel; about the hairdressing industry today? I feel the industry is at a point of daily change where there is no such thing really a “trend” anymore. The internet allows people access to a broad variety of styles and hair dressing techniques from many walks of life, Providing new inspiration, influences and ways of thinking. This gives people more freedom in how they wish to express themselves. Clients lead the way these days with high expectations, and are way more open minded to push their own boundaries.
What inspires you? I am influenced by so many things such as music, architecture, science, nature and modern art. I see things from a futurists standpoint. I am captivated by visions of our future and where things will lead. I love to help people push their own creative side of freedom and expression, I like to transform people and create looks that evolve with the clients daily lifestyle. I see the role as a collaboration of ideas between the stylist and the client to create a piece of living modern art.

Whether you’re looking for a hairstyle to tame your frizzy mane or feel like experimenting with different looks whilst your away, perhaps these summer holiday hairstyles will fit the bill nicely..
Give a nod to one of this season’s hair trends by sporting a thick headband on your holiday. There’s plenty of headbands to be inspired by. We particularly love a thick alice band to keep our hair out of the way when soaking up the sun. Who thought practical could ever look as chic, ey?
2. Mermaid Waves
Mermaid waves are this summer’s wave of choice. Not only are they extremely cool, they’re feminine and carefree, too. The key to these waves are to randomly curl the hair in different directions for a soft, effortless vibe. Also, remember to keep your mermaid waves looking fly by applying a wearable styling treatment like Sebastian Professional Potion 9 beforehand, to get glossy, whimsical waves that are frizz-free and protected against humidity.
3. The Ballerina Bun
This summer, we’re trading in our top knot for a ballerina bun. It’s much more fresh and fashionable, plus it’s super easy to do too. To create a ballerina bun, work a little bit of Sebastian Professional liquid gloss (link), into your fingers, flip your hair upside down and run the gloss through the lengths of your hair to de-frizz, polish and add a shine boosting finish. Then gather your hair into a bun and flip it back up again. Finish off by securing the bun with a hair elastic.
4. The Fishtail Braid
The fishtail braid is a classic braid that can be customized
in so many ways for your tasting. It makes for a super quick and easy look for
your summer days. Once you have mastered the fishtail braid, you can experiment
with different variations such as the French fishtail braid, chunky fishtail
braid, double fishtail braid, three-way fishtail braid, and so much more!

Many clients will be booking in their holidays and getting their hair summer ready! Have you booked in your hair appointment yet? Did you know that sun and UV rays, sea and swimming pools conspire to turn glossy hair into tangled tendrils. Here at Garbo’s we have put together some top tips for caring for your hair in the summer sunshine!
It just takes a little TLC to have great hair days all summer long. Here are some hair care tips that can get your hair ready to beat the heat even on the hottest of days.
A few tips for lustrous summer hair
Cover it up Probably the easiest way to protect your hair from the glaring sun is to cover them using a scarf or hat. While protecting your hair from UV rays, a scarf or hat helps keep the scalp healthy by retaining the moisture. If you are on the beach, then a scarf will also shield hair from the wind that can cause tangles, which can further result in damages and breakages.
Want to keep hair loose? Protect them with sun filters There are many sun protection filters that can protect hair from UVA and UVB damage. Choosing hair care products that protect hair from sun damage and keep coloured hair from fading. We love the wella Invigo Summer range (link) They keep hair protected before, during and after sun exposure. Don’t want to use chemicals? Consider using all-natural UV protectants like sunflower. Massage sunflower oil into your hair before sun exposure. Oil of sunflower not only protects hair from UV rays but it also provides the much needed moisture to your tresses. You can also switch to shampoo and conditioner with added UV protection with sunflower.
Outwit damage and frizzes Let’s be honest. No matter how careful you are, summer is going to take its toll on your hair. So, it is wise to be prepared to fight problems like dryness, split-ends, frizzes and green pool hair. Consider adding deep conditioning treatments once a week into your hair care regime to add moisture. You can also try hot oil rinse to get back the shine in your tresses.
Got green pool hair?
Try rinsing out your wet hair with a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar and 2 cups water. This will help you eliminate discolouration and dullness. To prevent green crust from depositing on your tresses, get your hair wet before entering the pool to prevent the absorption of chlorine.
Our favourite sassy summer haircuts
Tis the season for switching up your haircut. From layered pixies to Lobs, to long hair with curtain bangs, there is an option for every hair length. Here are a few of our favourites..
Kate Mara- and her choppy bob
To get Kate Mara’s look, ask for a true, shoulder-skimming bob. Switch it up depending on your mood by shifting your part and adding in undone waves with a flat iron.
Michelle Williams- and her stylish pixie
If losing length is the name of your summer hair game, then check out Michelle Williams’s short and sweet pixie.
Vanessa Hudgens- the lob
Vanessa Hudgen’s hairstyle isn’t your average lob. The hair was chopped at a slight angle for a chic take on a mid-length cut.
Behind the Chair…. Getting to know the team
If you haven’t yet met all the team, let us tell you a bit more about them and what inspires and motivates them. This month’s interview is with Natalie, she has been with us for 22 years!
Tell us a little bit about your hairdressing journey?
I started my career in Hairdressing with Garbos at the age of 14 as a Saturday girl. I have worked for over 22 years now with the Garbos Team. I became a Master Colour Expert in 2011 and also I am a Teacher within Garbos.
What do you think makes Garbo’s unique?
Garbos is unique in that we are really a family run business and everyone who works in the Team feels like part of that family as well.
How do you feel; about the hairdressing industry today?
The Hairdressing industry is still an exciting place to work in. Constantly changing and evolving it’s never dull.
What inspires you?
Colour still inspires me, over the years colours have changed and the innovation behind the colour has allowed us to take ideas further. Educating the younger team also inspires me as they are the next generation.
Ah Braids… there are so many ways you can wear them. The choice is yours: Rock braids in a sleek ponytail, wrapped around a topknot, or even tucked behind beachy waves. Second to weddings, Braids are up there with the most pinned boards. Braids are so versatile and perfect for those days when your hair really does need a wash but you’re short on time.
Take inspiration from your favourite celebrities to create these simple but gorgeous looks.
Emily Blunt has given the classic French plait a chic updo. Sophisticated and super stylish.
Channelling the free spirit in you, Mandy Moore’s tight wrap-around braids are positioned close to her hairline, with a soft twist of intentional messiness.
A festival chic look that almost broke the internet. We love Kate Bosworth’s backwards centre parting plait.
Millie Bobby Brown channelled Dior at this year’s Golden Globes with a seriously slick bun that revealed a secret trio of braids at the back
Tousled, textured and totally beautiful, Elizabeth Olsen’s loose side plait is the perfect way to accessorise a summer-ready floral dress.
If your feeling braid inspired, but need a few tips and tricks, let us help you. Book in to see your stylist here at Garbos.
Professional Products we love… you love
Annabel one of our gorgeous guests at Garbo’s loves Sebastian Dark Oil as she has quite unruly hair. This is a wonder product that actually tames her locks, and helps her look stylish and sophisticated day in day out.
We love it because it’s a lightweight hair oil with a luxurious feel, to soften hair and add body. Dark Oil contains extracts of precious natural oils sandalwood and argan, giving it an incredible fragrance. It smooths the cuticle, adds body and disappears into the hair using DiffusX technology, providing effortless styling and hair care.
We love it because Sebastian Trillant Shine & Heat protection Spray provides protection from heat styling, while adding sparkling shine and body to hair. Formulated with rock crystal extract, this lightweight hair spray gently conditions and gives extra shimmer.
Behind the Chair…. Getting to know the team
Our Flagship Salon is buzzing and full of creative inspiration. If you haven’t yet met all the team, let us tell you a bit more about them and what inspires and motivates them. This month’s interview is with the very talented Tristan…
Tell us a little bit about your hairdressing journey? I started having an interest in Hairdressing at the age of 14 so I joined a local salon in Portchester . When I was 16 we moved to New Zealand and I began an apprenticeship but at 17 I got a plane ticket to the UK. I joined Garbos shortly after my return and the rest is history.
What do you think makes Garbo’s unique? Garbo’s history is so unique, it is built on the foundation of family and love. The Garbo’s Team will always strive to give the client what they want which is quite unique in itself.
How do you feel; about the hairdressing industry today? The expectations of what people think they can achieve has changed so much due to the instagram and facebook generation. Us Hairdressers have a big job in educating our customers as to what is achievable for their hair.
What inspires you? Vidal Sassoon has always been an inspiration through out my career, but the thing that inspires me the most are my clients.
Blonde Roast, Chilli Chocolate and Periwinkle? Are we really talking hair colour here? Celeb stylists and Instagram influencers are always inspiring the latest hair color trends. This year the looks are bolder than ever. Here at Garbo’s, we are always on top of the trends and if you’re ready for a colour change your in safe hands.
Here are our favourite colour trends set for 2019.
“Living Coral” This peachy, metallic hair colour is bold and bright. Highlights woven between brights.
Are you a brunette hoping to add a splash of blonde to your locks? This gorgeous blonde roast is a new trend seamlessly combining shades of darker brown with shades of lighter blonde for the ideal hue. Will you be trying it this season?
An indulgent and rich hue, we are loving “chilli chocolate”! A colour for those that love the auburn and reds but aren’t quite ready to go the full way. Deep chocolate brown, sun kissed.
A trend that you are bound to see on blondes, brunettes and redheads is the creation of a shadow root. Choosing a deeper tone to dye your roots, your stylist then adds warm highlights to blend down the lengths. We think this is warm and wonderful.
2018 saw the cool platinum blonde shades, and as more celebs opt for blonde we are due to see a colour change to warm tones for 2019. This “honey hue” is multi-dimensional with a buttery finish.
Olaplex, Our Hair Hero!
At Garbo’s we love to use the Olaplex system when colouring hair. This reduces damage and ensures the colour lasts longer. Olpalex works from inside the hair strands to strengthen and repair damaged locks where the structure has broken down. Hair bonds break when hair is coloured and subject to regular heat, chemical treatments and up against the elements. It allows you to rebuild the strength, structure and integrity of hair and it is compatible with all hair types. We also offer an Olaplex treatment to help leave you with healthy, shiny and happy hair!
Behind the Chair…. Getting to know the team
As we welcome all our fantastic artistic team into the Flagship Southsea salon, we thought you might like to know a bit more about them and what inspires them. Last month we interviewed the lovely Tara .Today we chat to Andrew and find out what inspires his creations.
“My curiosity feeds my inspiration, shapes and fashion will always fuel this. “
My hairdressing journey started in 2006, when I wanted a career change from being a chef. I always admired my stylist where I got my haircut , and have always loved fashion and design. He kinda challenged me to give it a go, and 13 years later, a few awards and a portfolio I am fiercely proud of , i’m still here . Always learning and trying to do better. And now I am a focusing on passing my knowledge to others , but still striving to be my best.
The hairdressing industry has changed massively. Instagram, facebook and Pinterest have exploded our craft to the masses , but has left us with very unrealistic, unachievable outcomes. Our craft can be demonstrated on-line or in picture format , but not necessary showing you the path, which is never as easy as they make it look. We will always be a core hairdressers of people that cover the bases correctly , and when needed , push the boundaries, but we will always tell you these boundaries of what is achievable and will never over promise. We believe in getting the basics right , and the rest will follow. The industry is thriving , but is hairdressing becoming more about social media? Have we lost our craft , lost in translation. All I know is , I will do my best and always try my hardest, the industry is about us stylists, but the hairdressing is about YOU.
What makes Garbo’s unique is quite simple. The Staff. We care, we care about you as a client, not always focusing on the on point trends or instagram pictures. We care about the health of your hair, your well being and how we can make you feel and leave different to when you came in. It’s not about trends or forward thinking fashion all the time, it’s about tailoring our skills to your needs, be it a good ear to listen to or a bit of advice on this funny planet we call earth. Don’t forget we have many titles and awards to back up our skills, but we don’t focus on those , we focus on you and your needs.
I would just like to thank you all for the lovely messages of good luck that I have received. It has been a wonderful 26 years that I have spent living and working in Portsmouth. I was so lucky when I arrived in Portsmouth, the chance meeting with Jimie and Peter and then the wonderful business relationship that grew from that meeting.
Garbos has been such an important part of my life and when I look back on those wonderful moments, especially the Hairdressers Business Awards in London, all the amazing photo shoots that we have done over the years, to all the young people that we have helped train to be great hairdressers and go on to open their own salons and make a career for them selves. What also stands out for me as memorable moments are the Charity Events that Garbos put on over the years, what fun we all had and also in the process raising thousands of pounds for worth while local causes.
As I go away to sunnier climates I know that I am leaving Garbos in safe hands and that you will all get looked after in the 5 Star Garbos way.
